I remember first hearing about The Magic Roundabout many years ago while conversinng online with my Brit friends; we were talking about shows we'd grown up on. I looked TMR up online, saw that it was about a bunch of characters who lived in a town with a carousel in it, persued it no further, and forgot all about it.
When Doogal was in theatres here in America, I thought it looked horrifyingly abysmal. Even though I heard it was based on The Magic Roundabout, I refused to see it, and forgot all about it.
In early 2008 I saw that Doogal was going to be on cable so I set my TiVo to snag it, figuring I could always delete it if I hated it. So, I watched it. I grit my teeth at the horrifyingly abysmal dialogue and bodily noises, but was captivated by the animation and character designs. Quite frankly I've never been so torn by an animated movie before; it was both vomitous and adorable at the same time. By this time I had forgotten that this thing was supposed to be TMR so when I looked the movie up on IMDb the news surprised me. However, I had never known that Doogal was nothing more than a redub of a proper TMR movie so I immediately grabbed a torrent online. I freaking loved it.
I hate that Doogal was made, but it did get me into The Magic Roundabout so I'm not sure how much I can really curse its existance. But honestly the main reason I wanted to make this website was to make info on TMR more accessible to Americans - a TMR site for Americans by an American. Not that you have to be an American to enjoy this site of course, just understand that I am creating this site as someone who did not grow up on the show, and who was introduced to it late in life by way of Doogal, unfortunately like many other non-Brits.
Besides, I couldn't find anther fansite for the film, and precious little info really on the classic series. I don't know how much is really going to end up on here but I'll do my best. The classic series is very difficult to come by here, as it has never been released on DVD (I have a multiregion player so that would be fine). It's been released on video but I don't have a PAL player so converting those would be inconvenient. If anyone can help me get ahold of episodes either of the classic or new series on Nick Jr (save for the three DVDs of the new series that came out, I have those) it would be greatly appreciated, as would simply a good episode guide (at least titles and airing order). :^)
