Notes on each song are in italics. Two things about the soundtrack: One, the great song "Food Food Food" is not on the soundtrack, but a song by Bill Barnacle, "Din' We" is, which was obviously cut from the final version of the film. Two, The soundtrack does not include any of the non-lyric songs, that is, none of the score, which I believe was composed by Tom Pierson. It's a great score, too, and I haven't seen it recorded anywhere else. I will keep looking.

The soundtrack was released in 1980 and was released primarily on vinyl, but I have heard of the rare cassette out there every once in a while. And it was never rereleased onto cd later whan cds came out. I got two copies of the record off of eBay, and you should be able to find one there or at used record stores if you persist. I also have all these tracks as well as the Harry Nilsson demos available in a .rar archive available as a torrent. If you need this and there are no seeders email me and I'll try to seed it for you.

I Yam What I Yam

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

[spoken]
You don't have to be no fish to tell when you're flounderin'
What am I? Some kind of barnacles on the dinghy of life?
I ain't no doctors but I knows when I'm losin' me patiensk
What am I? Some kind of judge, or a lawyers?
Aw, maybe not; but I knows what laws suits me
So what am I? I ain't no physciscisk, but I knows what matters
What am I? I'm Popeye, the sailor

[sung]
And I yam what I yam what I yam and I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam 'cause I yam what I yam

And I gots a lot of muskle and I only gots one eye
And I never hurts nobodys and I'll never tell a lie
Tops to me bottoms and me bottoms to me top
And that's the way it is 'till the day that I drop
What am I?
I yam what I yam!

I yam what I yam what I yam what I yam what I yam

I can open up an ockean I can take a lot of sail
I can lose a lot of waters and I'll never have to bail
I can pushk up Madagascar grab a whale by the tail
What am I?
What am I?
I yam what I yam!

I'm Popeye, the sailor
I'm Popeye, the sailor
I'm Popeye, the sailor
I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam
I yam what I yam what I yam what I yam
I'm Popeye the sailor man!

Food, Food, Food

Lyrics from the storybook. May vary from lyrics in film.

Everything is food, food, food
Everything is food to go
Everything is food for thought
Everything you knead is dough

It is food
Everything is food

Everything is meat, meat, meat
Careful what you put on your feet
Once it lived on an animal
Now it walks along with you
It could be food
Food, food, food

It is food
Everything is food

Everything is upside down now
Everything is sunny side up
It's ubiquitous
Enigmatic and
They can't trick us
With no hot dogmatic

It is food, food, food
And it's full of flavor
Food, food, food
It's so good to savor

Everything is food, food, food
Everything is upside down
Everything is sunny side up
It's ubiquitous
Enigmatic and
They can't trick us
With no hot dogmatic

It's food, food, food
Make no mistake about it
Food, food, food

Never ever doubt it
Food, food, food
Everything is food

He Needs Me

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

And all at once I knew
I knew at once
I knew he needed me

Until the day I die
I won't know why
I knew he needed me

It could be fantasy, o-oh
Or maybe it's because

He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me

Dah de da da da da da da da da da
Dah de da da da da da da da da dah

It's like a dime a dance
I'll take a chance
I will because he needs me

Noone ever asked before
Before because they never needed me

[Popeye]
But I do

But he does!

Maybe it's because he's so alone
Maybe it's because he's never had a home

He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me

For once, for once in life
I've finally felt
That someone needed me

And if it turns out real
Then love can turn the wheel

Because

He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me

He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me
He needs me he needs me

Dah de da da da da da da da da dum
Dah de da da da da da da da da dah

Swee'pea's Lullaby

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

Swee'pea...

Everybody needs to have somebodys
Even if it's only me
So stops yer cryin' Swee'pea
An' trys to go to sleeps
I don't knows how you got here
I don't knows if you cares
You coulda comes from Heavens
Or a typhoon anywhere

Oh me I came from Heaven
Of Catalina Lagoon
And I was told me mammy
Gave me up in a typhoon

So don't you cry, little Swee'pea
You and me, we's both the same
And the biggest tear I ever seen
Was in the eye of a hurricane

Go to sleep, sleep sleepy
I'll tell you what you sees
And someday when you's older
I'll tell yous all about me

Love...Popeye

Din' We

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. Omitted from the final version of the film. If the lyrics don't make sense to you, it is because the song was sung by the town drunk. Really.

We walked in clouds up there, remember
Looking for eachother...din' we
Din' we

I forget the place
Was New York in June
Moonlight in New York

Such a wonderful affair

You'll hold my hand in mine, and yours
Din' we

Someone, someone din' care
I like to think I'm yours,
Away, away, and not forgotten

Din' we, you and me
Din' we

Here you were mine
My heart bleeds for everyone
Take it or leave me, it's not enough

But darlin', do you recall
My Funny Valentine
Din' we

Dance with me
Leave it all behind
Like we did before
When you were mine

Sleep, sleep, sleep, my darlin'
Will you be mine
Oh, din' we

Walked through the stars, hand in hand, remember
Something over the rainbow

You show me yours, and I'll show you mine
Din' we

It isn't easy, being me and you
You turn on the lights, I'll turn off the phone
We held eachother tight
Din' we

Oh, din' we

Sweethaven

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

Sweet Sweethaven
God must love us
We the people
Love Sweethaven
Hurray hurray Sweethaven
Flags are wavin'
Swept people from the sea
Safe from democracy
Sweeter than a melon tree
Put here for you and me
Sweethaven
Sweet Sweethaven
God must love us
We the people
Of Sweethaven
God must have landed here
Why else would he strand us here
Where the air is nice and clear
Sweethaven even sounds so near
To Heaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
God will always bless Sweethaven
God will always bless Sweethaven

Blow Me Down

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

In the mornin' air
There's so much to bear
Blow me down

It's the wind 'n air
Tryin' its double dare to
Blow me down
Blow me down

It's no bother but
I'd rather not
That's easy to see

Wherever I go
I yam what I yam
That does it for me

Believe it or not

It's a lovely day
It's a perfect day
Blow me down

It's a lovely place
Think I'd like to stay but
Blow me down
Blow me down

It's nice and friendly here
I think I'll spend a year
Or two maybe three

I yam what I yam
Wherever I goes
I comes from the sea

Believe it or not

In the evenin' air
Lots of people there
Tryin' to blow me down

But unlike the clothes I wear
I haven't got a care, so
Blow me down
Blow me down

It's no bother but
I'd rather not
That's easy to see

Wherever I go
I yam what I yam
I comes from the sea

In the mornin' air
There's so much to bear
Blow me down

It's the wind and air
Tryin' to double dare to
Blow me down
Blow me down

It's no bother but
I'd rather not
That's easy to see

Wherever I go
I yam what I yam
That does it for me

Believe it or not

Sailin'

[Popeye]
Oh I've been sailin' 'bout the seven seas
Lookin' for somebodys who would sails wit' me
Sail wit' me
Sail wit' me

[Olive]
And I've been waiting for someone like you
A man who could love me and would promise to
Stay with me
Stay with me
Stay with me

[Both]
Sailin'
Sailin'
Sailin'
Sail...

[Popeye]
Nothin' feels better than a rows on the sea

[Olive]
And I can't think of anyone but you
To stay with me
Stay with me
Stay with me
Stay with me

[Popeye]
Sail wit' me

[Olive]
Stay with me

[Popeye]
Sail wit' me

It's Not Easy Being Me

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

It's not easy bein' me
Masker of me own deskiny
And I hates responsibiliky
It's not easy bein' me

Oh it's hard to be in charge

[Bluto]
Even harder bein' large

But you're charged when you're in charge
It's not easy bein' me

Right front rear right
Don't step in front of me!

[Bluto]
Right left left right
Yes sir, your Admiralty!
I hate you so much!

It's not easy bein' me
Admiral of me own ship at sea
Now I knows why I admires me
It's not easy bein' me

[Bluto]
It's not easy bein' me

The problems of the large

[Bluto]
If ya know what I mean

He's large he's large!

[Bluto]
I got me own destiny

Yo ho, yo ho!

[Bluto]
It's not easy bein' mean!

Sometimes something happen
I don't know why anymore
Sometime one time something happened
I don't know what anymore

It's not easy bein' me
Masker of internal piracy
And it's not the all-end of me
Still, it's not easy bein' me

It's not easy bein' me

It's not easy bein' me / [Bluto] It's not easy bein' mean

It's not easy bein' me

It's not easy

He's Large

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

He's tall
Good lookin'
And he's large
He's large
Large
Tall
Large
So large
And he's mine

He's not a mandolin
Oh no
He's an accordian
I'll have to squeeze him each night to keep him warm
Warm
Oh...

He's virile
And he's strong
Strong
He's strong
Strong
And he's large
Large
Large
Large

Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo dah dah dah
Dah dah dah
Dah dah dah

He's got money and respect
That's true
He's better than the rest
That's true
He may not be the best
But he's large
And he's mine
Large
Large
Large
Large
Mine
Mine
Mine
Mine

Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo dah
Dah dah dah
Dah dah dah

It may seem funny but it's not
Oh no
I'm thankful for what I've got
Me too
It may not be a lot
But he's large
And he's mine

I'm Mean

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

I'm mean I'm mean I'm mean
Ya know what I mean
He's mean he's mean
Ya know what I say

I say what I mean
That's true that's true
I mean what I say
He do he do

I'm so mean I had a dream of beatin' myself up
I broke my nose I broke my hand I wrestled myself to the ground and then
Choked myself to death then broke the choke and woke up

That's how mean I'm mean I'm mean
Ya know what I mean
He's mean he's mean
I practically lost
The fight of his life
And it took me all night
All night all night
But I came out all right
All right all right
Because I'm so mean

I'm mean
He's mean he's mean
Ya know what I mean
He's mean he's mean
I mean that I'm mean
He's mean he's mean
I mean what I say
He's mean he's mean
Ya know what I mean
He's mean he's mean
I'm meaner than spit
That's it that's it
I'm meaner than [here he gets drowned out by crowd]
That's it that's it
I'm meaner than mean
He's mean he's mean

[spoken by someone]
He pauses for a moment
Looks around, picks up a tiger
And completely demolishes a whole building
With one puff

[back to the song]
I'm mean
He's mean he's mean
Ya know what I mean
He's mean he's mean
If you know what I mean
He says he's mean
If you know what I mean
He says he's mean

He's mean he's mean
[repeat]

Kids

Lyrics from the soundtrack album. May vary from lyrics in film.

[all spoken]
I am poppa to no male, nor no female child...that no court could prove otherwise! And certainly not the likes of no skinnipated, sissipated, frump like you. Children! Children! Kids! Children! Give 'em everythin' they want, and what do you gets in return? Nuttin! Nuttin! Nuttin! But heartache, heartache, sadness, and misery! And a bad time once in a while when you try ta give 'em a bath, and they don't want it! And another bad time when you wanna do somethin' that you really wanna do, but all they wanna do is know what you wanna do! Bless their little hearts; if they were really made outta gold, I'd like ta sell 'em on the open marketplace, and make me a fortune! Kids! They don't know what they're doin'. Kids! Dad-blast 'em, they're gonna lead ya to ruin! They cry at you when they're young, they yell at ya when they're older, they borrow from ya when they're middle-aged, and they leave ya alone to die--without even payin' ya back! Children! Pooey! Give 'em everythin' they want, and what do ya get back in return? You get nothin'! Why they're just smaller versions of us, ya know, and I'm not so crazy about me in the first place--so why would I want onna them? I ask ya...Children! Ah, children. Sure they're soft, they're cuddly, they're friendly when they wanna be. They know how ta smile, and get what they want; but that's not enough, if you know what I mean--and I think ya know what I mean. Cuz I'm talkin' about kids. Phooey! Phooey on alla them! Why, my greatest hope in life is that someday, onna them might grow up and get married, so they can have children! Oh, they're okay for some people I guesses, but then again, some people's children--bleh! Lock up the little moppetites! Try feedin' one at three in the mornin', you'll see what I mean if you know what I mean I hope you know what I mean cuz I sure know what I mean. I think that's why I don't like 'em very much. Because you pour your heart out to 'em, you give 'em everythin' they want: give 'em candy, and a lotta toys, and what do ya get back? You get a lotta noise! "Na-na-na-na-na-na!" I'm through with children, I'm through with kids, there ain't nothin I'm never gonna do about it! First of all, they should be born when they're 21. That way they can vote right away, which is what they already wanted to do, since the minute they got here. They wanna run things, they wanna run everythin'! They wanna run the world, and that's what they're gonna do someday. They ain't gonna stop until its called "The Planet of the Little Moppetites"!
